The Book of Common Prayer

Das Book of Common Prayer (BCP) (vollständig: The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of Sacraments, and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church after the Use of the Church of England), das erstmals 1549 veröffentlicht wurde, entstand während der englischen Reformation größtenteils unter der Ägide Thomas Cranmers. Unter Einbezug zahlreicher anderer Quellen steht Cranmers protestantische Theologie im gesamten Buch im Fokus. Die Gottesdienste behalten jedoch die traditionellen Formen und die sakramentale Sprache bei, die von den mittelalterlichen katholischen Liturgien übernommen wurden.Von den Protestanten als zu traditionell kritisiert, wurde es 1552 durch eine erheblich überarbeitete Fassung ersetzt.
