Ziya Gökalp (1876-1924)

The Turkish sociologist Ziya Gökalp (born Mehmed Ziya, 1876–1924) had a great influence on the establishment of modern Turkey as a secular state through his publishing activity. He rejected (pan-)Islamism and the Ottoman Empire and instead advocated Turkish nationalism.
