Westminster Abbey

The construction of Westminster Abbey in London was commissioned in 1245 by Henry III of England (1207–1272). The Abbey is the traditional coronation and burial place of British monarchs. It is a "Royal Peculiar", a church responsible directly to the sovereign and not belonging to a diocese. Westminster Abbey is the final resting place of many famous people, including British statesmen and a number of artists (in Poet’s Corner). This lithograph by Thomas Picken shows the Abbey in 1851.
