Wedding celebrations at the court of Philip the Good

The court of the Dukedom of Burgundy was known throughout Europe for its discerning taste and exemplary style. The uniform colour of the clothing in this case indicates that a theme has been prescribed for a festive occasion. The different dress styles of the genders are clearly discernible: the men are wearing short dresses revealing their legs, which were considered an aspect of male beauty at that time; the ladies are wearing close-fitting, very long robes with trains (cotehardie and houppelande).
