This etching froim 1754 by the Dutch artist Jan van Ryne shows Dutch ships in the Table Bay and the Dutch Cape Colony on the shore of the Cape of Good Hope. Located on the shore of Table Bay, the outpost was developed by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as a supply station for Dutch ships sailing to East Africa, India and the Far East. The colony was also the first permanent European settlement in South Africa.
