The Union of Lublin Monument, commemorating the Union of Lublin in 1569 under King Zygmunt Augustus II of Poland (1520–1572), was erected in 1828 by order of the writer and politician Stanislaw Staszic (1755–1826). The base of the monument, which stands on Lublin's Lithuanian Square, depicts two figures holding hands as personifications of Poland and Lithuania.
