This fragment from the 1830s reproduces a painting by Alexander Orlovsky (1777–1832). Orlowsky, a Polish painter specialising in horses and horsemen, depicts two Kalmyk riders in their typical costume. The Kalmyks, a Buddhist people, migrated to central Asia from Mongolia in the early 17th century.
