In 1928 France built a mosque for its Senegalese Muslim soldiers stationed in Fréjus. Constructed of rose-colored concrete, it was built on the model of the Great Mosque (Missiri) of Djenné (Mali). Like the Paris Mosque, built two years earlier, this construction project was part of France's Islam policy during the interwar years.
