This lithograph shows visitors admiring the models presented in the Great Hall of the Royal Polytechnic Institution in London. The Institution was founded in 1838 in order to provide an educational service for Londoners; it later became the University of Westminster. John Henry Pepper (1821–1900), a chemist and the director of the Institution, established a series of evening classes in educational and trade subjects and published a number of popular scientific text books.
