Chipko movement IMG

Four Chipko protesters are clinging to a tree which they are protecting from being logged. Chipko is Hindi for "hug" or "cling to". The movement originated in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand in 1973 and was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi's (1869–1948) non-violent protest forms. The movement used these tactis in the attempt to stop the himalayan deforestation.
