The book La théorie et la pratique du jardinage by the French author Antoine-Joseph Dezallier d'Argenville offers a comprehensive description of the design principles of the classical French garden (first edition in 1709). In the second edition of 1713, the author included changes that indicate that in the garden of Marly a new model of naturalness had been realized in French garden design. He introduces this "naturalness" in examples of terrain modelling and greening, and particularly in the use of lawns and entwined latticework (Treillage).
