Tavern Garden, 1660

Jan Steen (1626–1679) was a native of Leiden and his paintings capture numerous scenes from daily life in the Netherlands in the 17th century. His depiction of a tavern garden in summer shows not only the very simple food offered to the guests, which consisted of just a few different foods, but also the gregarious life of the time.
