Sabiha Gökcen (1913-2001) in Uniform

As one of the first Turkish female pilots and the first female fighter pilot in the world, Sabiha Gökçen (1913–2001) became an "icon of Kemalism." She was one of Atatürk's eight adopted children and helped Turkey gain a progressive reputation through her modern appearance. The photograph from 1938 shows her surrounded by military men.
