Russian Orthodox Church of St. Elizabeth on the Neroberg Mountain in Wiesbaden, Germany

Dynastic ties between the Russian and German nobility strengthened the contact between Russia and the German states. Especially in a number of German spa towns, temporary Russian Orthodox communities came into being, for example in Wiesbaden. The Russian Orthodox church of this South Western German spa town was erected between 1847 and 1855 in memory of the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Mikhailovna of Russia (1826–1845), who had been married to Adolf, Duke of Nassau-Weilburg (1817–1905) but had died in childbirth aged only 19 years. During the 1920ies, many Russian emigrants, fleeing communist rule, came to Wiesbaden and formed a community with St. Elizabeth at its centre. The community still exists today; it is part of the German diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia.
