Robert Schuman (1886–1963) served as French prime minister in 1947/1948 and as foreign minister in the period 1948–1953. As a co-founder of the Coal and Steel Pact and president of the European Parliament (1958–1960), he helped to make Europe an independent economic power in global trade.
