Réunion de la Rive gauche du Rhin à la République Française le 18 Ventôse An 9

This copperplate engraving by Nikolaus Müller, a Jacobin from Mainz, and Samuel Harter, a Swabian Jacobin, celebrates the Treaty of Lunéville (9 February 1801), which enshrined in international law the incorporation of the départements west of the Rhine into the French Republic. The artists believe that this will result in a blossoming of the economy and society in that region. This is symbolized by the rainbow, the palm (symbol of resurrection), Mercury's staff (visible at the front as a symbol of trade), the goddess of freedom with the bundle of lictors and die Phrygian cap on the lance.
