In 1662 a Dutch edition of Baldassare Castiglione's The Courtier appeared and was dedicated to Jan Six. In 1664 Rembrandt painted his good friend as the almost perfect patrician. The choice of bright colours for Six's clothes is unusual, generally more serious and darker colours were preferred for the portraits of gentlemen.
