The "Iz'ba" (Russian: cottage) was built in 1856 by order of the entrepreneur, banker and collector Vasilij Kokorev (1817–1889). Elaborately built with wooden ornaments in the Old Russian style, the building was a gift for the historian Mikhail Pogodin (1800–1875). He maintained his historical collections in it and used the "cottage" as a meeting place for Moscow's literary elite. During the Second World War, the house was damaged by a bomb; it was not restored until the 1970s.
