The municipal hospital in Hamburg-Eppendorf, which opened in 1888 and allocated around 1,300 beds in no fewer than 80 almost exclusively single-story buildings, is regarded as a prime example of a large German hospital in pavilion design. The 20-hectare site is located a good 5 km north of Hamburg city hall on what was then the outskirts of the city.
