Pehr Hilleström d.Ä. (1732–1816), The Morning Toilet

The term "boudoir" originally referred to a small private room for ladies, subsequently also a dressing room. The word could have a variety of nuances depending on the cultural circle and the period. This depiction by the Swedish painter Hilleström shows a lady during the morning toilette. While two little dogs frolic in the foreground, the butler puts the lady's hair in curlers. A maid holds a mirror, while the girl on the left is responsible for the clothing.
