Palikaren bei Athen

The Captains of the Armatoles were also known as Palicars. The Armatoles were originally Christian militiamen charged by the Ottomans with securing difficult terrain like the mountainous region of the central Greek mainland, but then took part in the wars of liberation on the rebel side.
