The painting by Aristarch Lentulov (1882–1943) from 1913 shows an abstract representation of the Moscow metropolis. As a member of the avant-garde artist group "Knave of Diamonds" (Russian: Bubnovyj valet), Lentulov began in 1913 to pursue the art movement of Cubo-Futurism, a fusion of Cubism and Futurism that emerged in Russia especially after the First World War.
