Marktplatz in Rzhyshchiv ca. 1900 IMG

The market square formed the centre of economic activity in the shtetl. It was here that, every week, products were exchanged between town and country. It was flanked by "superior" houses, i.e. brick or stone ones (Polish kamiennicy). (Marie Schumacher-Brunhes, Lille)
