The Karlskirche was built from 1708 to 1715 at the behest of King Charles XII of Sweden (1682–1718) in his capacity as Duke of Zweibrücken. The architect, Haquinus Schlang, was also a Swede. Along with much of the old town of Zweibrücken, the church was destroyed by firebombing in March 1945. It was rededicated in 1979.
