Portrait Benjamin Franklin (1706–1790), Kupferstich nach einem Gemälde von Charles Nicolas Cochin (1715–1790), 1780, Johann Elias Haid (1739–1809); Bildquelle: Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division, http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/2003675418/.

Reproduced in copper and wood engravings, painted portraits of Franklin were distributed on a massive scale. This joint piece by Charles Nicolas Cochin and the Augsburg copper engraver Johann Elias Haid shows Benjamin Franklin with his most important attributes: simple clothes, wire glasses and a fur hat. The latter also places the American ambassador close to Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who was also often depicted wearing similar headgear, in his case the famous "Armenian cap".
