Jean Domat's writings also exercised a considerable and constituative influence on the drafting of the Code civil. Writing in his five-volume Les loix civiles dans leur ordre naturel (1689–1694), the French lawyer friend of the philosopher Blaise Pascal (1623–1662) and supporter of the Jansenist cause, attempted to provide an analysis of Roman law according to the principles of Natural Law. Both the approach and contents of his work exercised considerable influence on the authors of the Code civil.
