The then officer in the Russian army Jarosław Dąbrowski (1836–1871) took part in the January Uprising of the Polish independence movement in 1863 and was exiled to Siberia as a result. After his escape in 1865, he went to France and in 1871 joined the Paris Commune. In May 1871 he became commander-in-chief of the commune's forces, as one of the few Communards with military experience. He died after being wounded in the barricade fight at Montmartre in Paris.
