Scottish Catholics, too, sought refuge from persecution on the continent. In 1547, the Scottish Privy Council declared the country’s leading Catholic prelates outlaws and rebels. At the top of the list was James Beaton, Archbishop of Glasgow, who fled and died in Paris in 1603.
