During the Thirty Years' War paintings of soldiers became popular in The Netherlands. The Dutch painter Jacob Duck specialized in this kind of genre pictures often depicting soldiers in guardrooms or taverns. This painting shows soldiers quartered in a stable together with their horses and dogs. One group, forming the centre of the image, is resting on a makeshift bed.
