Innocent Veniaminov as Metropolitan of Moscow (1797–1879)

Innocent Veniaminov (1797–1879) was a priest, archbishop, metropolitan and missionary in the Russian Orthodox Church. His missionary voyages took him especially to the Aleut and Tlingit peoples of the North Pacific. As a missionary on the island of Unalaska, he translated passages from the scriptures into the Aleut language. Since the Aleut culture has been largely destroyed, Veniaminov’s records of his time among the Aleuts continue to provide anthropologists with a valuable source.
