Hungarian Uprising 1956: Young Revolutionaries on the József körú

The photograph shows three young revolutionaries on the József körút (part of the great boulevard) in Budapest, Hungary, during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. The nationwide revolution which began as a students' protest started on 23 October. Directed against the Hungarian People's Republic and its policies imposed by the Soviet Union, the revolution was eventually crushed when Soviet forces invaded Budapest and other regions of the country. The Hungarian resistance continued until 10 November 1956. In the revolution's aftermath approximately 200,000 Hungarians fled the country (caption by the editorial team).
