Die Griechisch-Orthodoxe Schule in Fanar, Istanbul IMG

After the Orthodox Christians of the Ottoman Empire had been united under the authority of the Patriarch of Constantinople, the wealthy merchants of Greek origin who were living in the Fanar district began to influence the Patriarchate. This photo shows the building of the Greek Orthodox School in Fanar which was erected between 1881 and 1883. The school still exists and is now subject to Turkish school legislation, but it continues to offer lessons in Greek language, literature and Greek Orthodox religion.
