The French politician and historian François Guizot (1787–1874) worked as Professor for modern history at the Sorbonne (Paris) since 1812. Serving as minister of the interior and minister of education (1830; 1832–1837) under Louis Philippe (1773–1850) and later as foreign minister between 1840 and 1848 he was also prime minister for a short time (1847/1848). His considerable reputation as a historian rests on his books Histoire de la révolution d'Angleterre, 1826–1827; Histoire de la civilisation en Europe, 1828; Histoire de la civilisation en France, 1828–1830, and his work as a founder-member of the Comités historiques. With a command of the source material, he is also known for a number of editions of sources.
