The bicycle gained great popularity in the 19th century. It was initially favored by aristocrats and wealthy citizens, and later became popular with the lower middle class as well. As cycling became more attractive as a hobby, organizations such as the Cyclists' Touring Club (formerly the Bicycle Touring Club) and other cycling groups were established in Great Britain around 1878. Members would regularly ride together as a group, often wearing uniforms during their journeys. The picture shows a group of cyclists, including a woman on a tricycle (front center), followed by several men on penny-farthings.
