The photograph shows the signing of the treaty that established the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) on 18 April 1951 in Paris. From left to right: the Belgian foreign minister Paul van Zeeland (1893–1973), the Luxemburg foreign minister Joseph Bech (1887–1975), the Italian foreign minster Carlo Sforza (1872–1952), the French foreign minister Robert Schuman (1886–1963), chancellor and foreign minister of the German Federal Republic Konrad Adenauer (1876–1967) and the Netherlands' foreign minister Dirk Uipko Stikker (1897–1979).
