William Young, 33rd Regiment

This photograph shows the war amputees William Young, Henry Burland and John Connery, who were visited in Chatham Hospital by Queen Victoria. Each of them lost at least one leg. John Connery is holding a prosthetic leg in his hands.

Joseph Cundall (1818–1895), William Young, 33rd Regiment. Wounded by canon fire in the most advanced trenches on 18 June 1855. Both legs amputated. Henry Burland, 34th Regiment. Frostbite in the trenches. Both feet amputated in Turkey. Legs subsequently amputated in Portsmouth. John Connery, frostbite in the trenches. Suffered three amputations.
