French Trenches in Front of the Masten Redoubt, 1855

The navy officer Henri Durand-Bragers (1814–1879) documented the defensive fortifications and the trench warfare. Though his drawings had been made for the military as enemy reconnaissance, they found their way into the French press along with descriptions of life in camp.
