Edward Whymper mit Eispickel 1910 IMG

The picture shows the British engraver and mountaineer Edward Whymper (1840–1911) with a so-called "haversack" and an ice axe. Whymper led the first ascent of the Matterhorn on 14 July 1865; four members of the rope team died during the descent.
