Quelques-unes des conjurations des Jésuites mises en ordre chronologique, copper engraving, c. 1759, unknown artist; Bildquelle: Bibliothèque de Port-Royal, Paris, Est. 147.

One of the severest accusations put forward by the enemies of the Jesuits during the debates of the 1750s and 1760s was that some members of the order had permitted the murder of tyrants in their moral theology. Anti-Jesuit authors claimed that the Jesuits had not merely stuck to theory, but had also put their regicidal doctrine into practice by instigating virtually all of the assassination attempts against crowned heads that had occurred since the reformation. The engraving lists features such assassination attempts since 1581, imputing them to the Jesuits and also leaving some blanks for future crimes of the order.
