The Hanseatic merchant Christian Matthias Schröder (1742–1821) built up the trading house Christ. Matthias Schröder & Co. and established branches in Bremen, Amsterdam and London as well as Saint Petersburg and Riga. The London branch was managed from 1804 by his sons Johann Friedrich (1780–1852) and Johann Heinrich Schröder (1784–1883). Schroders, a London-based asset management company with global operations, traces its roots to Johann Heinrich Schröder's founding of J. Henry Schröder & Co. in 1818.
