In 1474, the Grand Prince of Moscow Ivan III (1440–1505) engaged the Italian architect Aristotele Fioravanti (1415–1485) to complete the construction of the Cathedral of the Assumption (Uspensky Sobor), which Moscow master builders had begun constructing in 1472 but which had collapsed before it was finished. The cathedral was modelled on a cathedral of the same name in the city of Vladimir, which is situated 190 km from Moscow.
