Caspar David Friedrich, Waldinneres bei Mondschein, ca. 1823/1830

Caspar David Friedrich is considered one of the most important artists of the early Romantic period. The landscape to the north of the Alps was his passion, as demonstrated by his many depictions of coasts and mountains. In this woodland scene, the radiant moon illuminates the blue night sky. Between a hillock and tree stumps, a man and a woman warm themselves at a red fire in a cave. This nocturnal woodland depiction was only discovered in 1992.
