The Allgemeine Krankenhaus der Stadt Nürnberg (General Hospital of the City of Nuremberg), built in 1897 in the Johannis district northwest outside the densely populated urban area, was soon completely surrounded by residential development. A new construction plan from 1925 consequently already targeted the southeastern edge of the city. After decades of setbacks, planning began in 1980 for the southern hospital, which opened in 1994 and is located a good 10 km away from the northern hospital on the southeastern edge of the city.
