Black Mountain College, a progressive liberal arts college that existed between 1933 and 1957, hired many émigré scholars. This photograph taken in summer 1946 shows faculty affiliated with the Arts Institute. From left to right: Leo Amino, Jacob Lawrence, Leo Lionni, Ted Dreier (?), Nora Lionni, Beaumont Newhall, Gwendolyn Lawrence, Ilse Gropius, Jean Varda (on the tree), Nancy Newhall (seated), Walter Gropius, Mary "Molly" Gregory, Josef Albers, Anni Albers.
