The photograph shows an American airplane landing at Berlin Tempelhof Airport being witnessed by crowd of people. After the Soviets had closed the land routes and waterways to West Berlin, the Western Allies supplied the West Berlin population with all the necessary goods and food by airlift. The Berlin Blockade lasted from June 24, 1948 to May 12, 1949. During this time the "Rosinenbomber" (raisin bombers) brought 2.3 million tons of foodstuffs, coal, and fuel into the city. The airlift officially ended on September 30, 1949.
