Saint Basil's Cathedral (actually: Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed) was built in 1561 as a token of gratitude and a monument to the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan on the Red Square in Moscow. It is considered one of Moscow's landmarks and was the city's main church during the tsarist era. Today, the cathedral is home to a museum that is part of the State Historical Museum across the street.
