Asturian miners' strike of 1934

This black-and-white photograph from 1934 shows arrested workers in Asturias, Spain. Labour unions had called for a general strike as a reaction to the fascist party CEDA joining the government of Alejandro Lerroux (1864–1949). The strike was unsuccessful in every region except for Asturia, where unions had cooperated with the Alianza Obrera and gained control over the Asturian capital Oviedo and other cities. Government troops crushed the rebellion with violent forces after 20 days, over 2,000 people died and around 30,000 were imprisoned. The leader of the military operation was Francisco Franco Bahamonde (1892–1975) who would later rule over Spain from 1939 to 1975 as a dictator.
