Archimandrite Sophrony (1896–1993), who was born in Russia, first pursued a career as a painter and moved to France in 1921. After having spent some time working as an artist, he joined St. Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute and later went to Mount Athos to become a monk. After he had been ordained priesthood in 1941, he returned to Paris and later went to England, taking part in the establishment of the Monastery of St. John the Baptist.
