Ferdinand Piloty d. Ä. (1786–1844): Albertus Durerus Noricus (nach Dürers Selbstbildnis von 1500 in München, Alte Pinakothek), Lithographie über Tonplatte mit Weißhöhung, 51,7 x 39,3 cm, ca. 1817/1834; Bildquelle: Museen der Stadt Nürnberg – Graphische Sammlung.

Albrecht Dürer, the most important German Renaissance artist, was of crucial importance for the "Model Germania". A sense of national superiority crystallized around his person and his work around 1500, when Celtis had designated him as the "German Apelles". Dürer's elevation to a representative of "Germania" is not surprising, considering that he was known to, or friends with, all of the literary protagonists of "Germania", including Celtis, Brant, Wimpfeling and Schedel.
