Adolph von Menzel, procession in Hofgastein, 1880

The painting by Adolph von Menzel shows a Corpus Christi procession in Bad Hofgaststein, Austria. Here two opposing groups meet. The local farmers, who are closely linked to the church, take part in the procession. They are confronted with curious spa guests from the city who ignore the events or watch them indifferently from a distance.
